Welcome!

Hi friends! This blog is for teachers and families- all for the sheer joy of literacy. When we are enthusiastic about reading and writing our students and our own kids become excited to read and write. I hope that we all can be models for those in our care- how did you show your passion for reading, writing, learning, language, or words today?? It's in those small, daily moments that we teach kids to love literacy.

Read Aloud Thursday: Final Read Aloud of the Year at Harbor House

When my daughter gets up from her nippity nap today, we are going to head over to a close-by after school program, Harbor House, where I will read a book aloud to the K-1 kiddos.

I have been so excited to choose books for this weekly opportunity. I have been gravitating towards the well-loved authors and books, in hopes that the kids will be able to easily find the books or authors again.

Today I plan to read, Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes.

Little Chrysanthemum has a lot of personality- kids can't get enough of her!

Here's an excerpt:

Chrysanthemum loved the way her name looked when it was written with ink on an envelope.
She loved the way it looked when it was written with icing on her birthday cake.
And she loved the way it looked when she wrote it herself in fat orange crayon.
Chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum.
Chrysanthemum goes to school and wilts when the other students find reasons to make fun of her unusual name. An eccentric (and lovely) music teacher helps the students to see the positive side of Chrysanthemum's wonderfully unique name.

I hope the kids like this one as much as I do; it's certainly tried and true!
